Why do we reject most leather before it reaches the workbench? This article explains how materials determine everything that follows. The Leather We use full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. Hides arrive as large, unfinished sides — stiff, dense, carrying the natural grain of the animal. Each one is checked by hand before anything is cut. Thickness, surface consistency, grain tightness. Only the sections that meet the standard are used. The mallet is used for setting seams, flattening folds, and driving stitching chisels through dense leather.
